Recipe of the Day: Nutmeg Tea Cookies

These little cookie logs are perfect for afternoon tea or coffee…yeah…go ahead…dunk them!

3/4 cup sugar

1/2 cup butter softened

1/2 cup shortening

1 egg

3 cups flour

2 tsp vanilla

1 TBSP freshly grated nutmeg

Frosting: 2 cups powdered sugar, 3 TBSP butter softened, 1 tsp vanilla, 2-3 TBSP heavy cream and more freshly grated nutmeg.

In a large bowl, beat sugar, butter and shortening, egg and vanilla until light and fluffy. Stir in flour and nutmeg and mix just until incorporated. Cover with plastic wrap and chill at least an hour. Heat oven to 350. Divide dough into 6 equal portions and on a lightly floured surface, shape each portion into a rope 1/2″ in diameter. Cut into 3″ lengths, place on a parchment lined cookie sheet and bake 10-12 minutes or until light golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheet to wire rack to cool. When completely cooled combine frosting ingredients (except nutmeg) Frost tops of each cookie and then sprinkle with nutmeg. Allow frosting to set and then store in a air tight container. Makes 4-5 dozen

Some notes on Nutmeg: Did you know that mace and nutmeg come from the same fruit? Mace is the outer shell and nutmeg is the actual seed. Both are yummy but I have a great attachment to nutmeg. I add it to lots of things…like homemade mac and cheese…yeah…its very versatile. Go here to read all about nutmeg!
