Housecleaning Day! My Aunt Dessie. And a recipe.

I have been very crafty lately. I told my mom yesterday I had had a “Dessie Day”. Dessie was my mom’s only sister. I never called her Aunt Dessie. I called her Ganky. All my life. Don’t ask because I dont know where it came from.

How to describe her, give her justice, yet be honest….Dessie was spoiled. Rotten. And a very hard worker if the work was something she liked. Hated to do housework, but loved to delegate it to others. Never owned a cookbook, but could make absolutely anything and as long as you never peeked into her kitchen, you would eat it. The woman could wreck a kitchen. Seriously. It was horrible. I never knew anyone to get sick from her cooking so it must have been just clean enough. Dessie loved me. A lot. She bought me things, and she taught me things. She tried to boss me but I was just enough like her not to listen. She comes to my mind so often. Like when I am in the middle of cleaning my kitchen and out of the corner of my eye I see a bag of fabric I picked up on the $2 a yard table, and all of the sudden I have raked everything off the kitchen table and have laid out the fabric to see what goes with what and I am suddenly completely immersed in “what can I make from this fabric?” That was Dessie. Ganky if you please. She would be cleaning her kitchen (on an extremely rare occasion) and look out the window and all of the sudden she was outside digging in a flower bed. Actual¬† work-work never held her attention.¬† You know the kind of thankless work that is required. And I have the same affliction. Oh I do it. But I dont really find it that interesting. However, I do love a clean house, so today, Friday, is to be designated Housecleaning Day. I am not sewing anything. Period. If I get my housework done in time, I am going to make a batch or two of soap. That is a big if because I havent really cleaned for three weeks. I have spot cleaned but there maybe enough hair on the bathroom rugs to make a wig…know what I mean?

So when I am finished with my first pot of coffee (I need the caffeine for motivation), I will put on my work clothes, my apron and get to it. I will start in my shoppe/studio…the most difficult first as all the fabric will be screaming at me. I keep telling myself I need an IPod. This is just another reason. I could listen to French lessons and clean and maybe I wouldnt hear the fabric. Then to the kitchen, laundry room…living room, and on down the hall. I am sure when Husband is up he will be right in the middle of it all, he likes to have thing orderly. Poor man. But I think I remember something about doing some vehicle maintenance today so I might be on my own. He will leave again on Monday so we have a busy weekend ahead. Time flies when you are having fun. Seems like he just got home. This trip he will be gone for 4 weeks. WOW that sounds almost like a month or so.

We have done so much cooking and eating while he is home, my gall bladder is somekinda upset with me! I will have to really watch it while he is away or I will be back to the dr to have it yanked out. I might try to schedule that surgery for next time he is home if things are going okay with my mom. She had a rough couple of days but that is to be expected I suppose. I feel sorry for her, she just doesnt feel like doing anything and she is so tired of NOT doing anything. That must me more than miserable. I honestly dont know what the next step with her will be. It seems the last thing the dr said in so many words was “Enjoy the time you have and wait.” Wait for what? To get worse? To feel a little better (doubtful)?

Well, this was a rambling post, if I do say so myself. Guess I better give you something for your time.

Benjamin’s Favorite Lemon Pound Cake

* 1 cup unsalted butter
* 3/4 cup white sugar
* 3 eggs
* 1 cup cake flour
* 2 tablespoons milk
* 1/2 lemon, juiced
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Allow butter to reach room temperature. Cream sugar and butter together until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and mix well. Add in flour, & milk. Beat each in well. Add juice of half a lemon, salt & vanilla. Make sure everything is well blended, and pour into a greased and floured loaf pan.
2. Bake at 325 degrees F for 45 minutes, checking for doneness by inserting a toothpick and seeing if it comes out clean. You almost want to underbake this
glaze with a mixture of powdered sugar and lemon juice

Really better the next day.

The cake recipe sounds wonderful. I made me a copy for to try it this weekend. Hope this finds you doing well, with a clean house, gall bladder acting better, and your Mom feeling better. I know this time is hard on you and yours. Just wanted you to know that I have all of you in my prayers. Take care and have a good one.

Hi girl! I think I may be related to your Aunt too!! Because I cannot get motivated, I have ended up outside and now on the computer. I REALLY need to clean today. First I have to make one of Haley’s favorites for the crock pot- stuffed bell peppers- then I guess if I am to tired from cleaning later at least I will not have to cook dinner. Your cake looks lovely! Oh, if I weren’t allergic to lemons I would be knocking on your door right now! Your blog looks so good, I have enjoyed reading it while having my cup of tea this morning .
