Picture of the Day: Nonnie & Grandson Sam

How adorable is this picture?  This was taken a few weeks ago before Mom went into the hospital. Sam is my mom’s only Great Grandson (so far) and she thinks he’s the cat’s pajamas.

Recipe of the Day: Bread Pudding

Here is the recipe I promised! This is not the same bread pudding that many of you are familiar with. This is the kind my family always made. It turns out more like a very moist cake / egg custard type dish. Hard to describe now that I am trying to. Husband wont touch it with a 10 foot pole…bad texture he says with a squinty look on his face.  Hannah will eat the outside harder edge.  Rachel says its “mumbly” so she’s with her dad on the un-like-ability of it. I love it, love the texture and so does Benjamin.

  • 4 cups of stale bread torn into chunks
  • 2 cups milk (I used 1 can of evaporated milk and the rest whole milk)
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Butter a 9×13 baking dish. Pour the milk over the bread and let set until well saturated and very mushy and can be stirred into a thick lumpy batter.

Add eggs & vanilla and pour into baking dish. Bake at 350 for about an hour or until it tests done.

I used the “knife to the center” test but I am sure a toothpick would work. Place on a rack to cool. Slice and enjoy!

Today I am pretty much playing the waiting game. Husband is sanding the hardwood floor in the living room and I am waiting to hear from hospice about Mom’s transfer home. Makes me nervous to wait but hate to start anything that can’t be stopped abruptly when I get the call.

On the menu for tonight: Salmon steaks – don’t know how I am preparing them – but having fun looking for a recipe.

Monday, Monday

I had a post all written and it disappeared!  Oh well…I will try to remember what I wrote.  I mostly wanted to thank you all for commenting and sending emails.  I know how precious your time is and I do appreciate you all.  It looks like tomorrow will be the big day.  Mom will be coming home with hospice care and I think she is a bit nervous about it.  Understandably.  I will keep you posted on what all takes place.

Here are a couple of new pictures of the remodel.

a little blurry but I was in a hurry.  And my new porch light.

I think the carpet is coming out today.  Also I do have a new recipe for you.  Bread Pudding.  Benjamin wanted my mom’s bread pudding and he had watched her make it probably a dozen times.  So he resided over my lack of expertise and it came out delish!  I will post the recipe maybe tonight…no promises of course.

Again thank you all so much. Have a great early Autumn Monday!
