Happy Fall Y'all!

I know I have promised recipes! I will give you a few here in a bit. Just wanted to pop in, say Bonjour! and tell you we are finalizing our trip to France! I am not EVEN kidding you! We plan to go to France. I hesitate to say “we are going” because I know, and you know, plans have a way of changing. But Husband is gung-ho and when he sets his mind, then he more than likely will see it happen. OooLALA! I will keep you all posted as things are lined up – but it looks as though he has decided on three months.  Honestly I think he wants to go just for the local markets and to learn more about the cuisine.  But who cares why???

Husband is putting a coat of paint on the window trim in the living room. And I am supposed to be — oh I don’t know what I am supposed to be doing! Oh yeah, planning our menu for Wednesday night. We are having a feast and company as well and looking so forward to it! Kids costumes are done and Husband and I decided to dress as Middle Aged Parents of Teenagers. We will no doubt look much like we always do! Rachel is Cleopatra, Benjamin is Pugsly Addams, and Hannah is Vixen~Santa’s reindeer – the one who wears a little too much make up – a bit tartish you know- don’t ask where they get these ideas…I havent a clue. I will post some pictures – at least give you a glimpse of my new hair cut. I will definitely post Husband’s recipe for the main dish that night…it is some sort of meat roll he’s concocted. Sounds YUMMY. I will also do pics. I have my sugar cookie dough made and chilling and Rachel will decorate them…Cats & Bats & and Pumpkins OH MY!! Husband also mentioned homemade ice cream.  Delish.  And Rachel asked for Broccoli Cranberry Salad.  I will post that recipe later.

So…I suppose I should post a couple of recipes tonight since I promised. AND tell you that I will start taking orders for Aprons in the next week or so! YEAH for me. If you are interested in knowing more about purchasing a NotQuiteJuneCleaver original let me know! I will be selling the one I just made…a little red and yellow number I am calling Maudie (in honor of my mom…whose most favorite color was yellow.

Each apron will have a few surprises in the package so don’t forget how GREAT one would be as a gift…and remember I am one woman so you will need to get your order in early! I plan to start sewing next week.

Oh I almost forgot we will be make a two day trip to Houston to see Lucy we are VERY excited about this exhibit.

I have time to post ONE or TWO recipes before Husband is finished painting.

Carrot & Potato Soup

3 cups water
3 cups vegetable or chicken broth
1 onion chopped
4 carrots sliced
5 potatoes diced
12 ounce can of evaporated milk
1/2 stick butter
salt and pepper to taste

In a saucepan, combine water broth, onion and carrots, simmer until crisp-tender. Add potatoes, cook until tender. Blend in evaporated milk and butter. Continue to cook for one minute over medium heat. Salt and pepper to taste.

Serves 5 as the soup course or double and serve as main dish…great with baguettes!

Okay, one more…one of my favorite soups…and it is soup weather isnt it???

Cream of Mushroom Soup

3 T butter
2 cups onion chopped
9 sliced mushrooms, divided
4 cups vegetable or chicken broth
Pepper to taste
4 cups milk
1/2 cup whipping cream

Melt butter in a Dutch oven, add onions and 5 cups mushrooms. Saute until onions are tender, add broth and pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, covered for 15 minutes. Remove from heat, allow to cool some and puree in a blender or food processor in small portions until smooth. Return to Dutch oven. Add remaining mushrooms and return to boil. Reduce heat, simmer covered 10 more minutes. Stir in milk and cream, heat but DO NOT BOIL.

Serves 6 – AGAIN great with baguettes…really though, what isnt great with baguettes.

You do all have a great baguette recipe right?  If not just ask…I have a lovely one.

Bonsoir mes amis !

Nice surprise!

Husband called about 3 p.m. and asked how soon I could leave for the airport. I said “Walking out the door now!” He got an earlier flight and we were some kinda happy! Home 4 whole hours early! AND the gift…came in a Ferrari bag…a ferrari coffee mug! Picture later. Gotta run…putting a roast in the oven for supper. Try to post a couple of “correct” recipes tomorrow.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Today is the big day (and a recipe, too)!

Got your notes about the recipe…correct now!

Husband text messaged me this morning at 2:50am to let me know he had made it to Milan and had bought me the quintessential Italian gift.  A ferrari??? Doubt it…wouldnt fit it his bag and WOW that would be declarable.  Italian leather..something??? Again, doubt it seriously.  I figure it is something kitchy like a miniature Mona Lisa or statue of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.  He knows whatever it is, it will pale in comparison to the fact that he is home. Ciao, baby.

Hopefully he got something decent to eat when he got to Milan.  He said he ate chicken and turkey and turkey and chicken while he was at work.  He also told me I had to make some cookies for him to take back to work with him – it will be the holidays and really they have no idea what a cookies is supposed to look or taste like!

Husband will arrive in Atlanta today at 3:35 and will have a 6 hour wait as usual.  If all goes as planned I will pick him up at 10 pm tonight.

We had a very interesting day yesterday.  I got my hair…well CUT.  To say the least!  It is very short.  I like it, hope Husband doesnt hate it.  It was time.  I wore my hair mid back for a few years but it was horrid.  So wild and unruly.  Just like me to wait till it turns cold to cut my hair.  Anywho…that wasnt the interesting part.  I left the younger ones with their oldest sister while I was shorn and when I got back Benjamin was covered in a rash.  He has been trying to get a cold for several days and you know the tonsil situation (which is much better) and this just threw me for a loop.  I loaded them back into the truck and headed to the pediatrician’s office.  Apparently he has a virus that includes a lovely, all over the body rash.  No fever at the drs office but by the time we got home he was feverish and just wanted to go to bed.  He is still asleep and I am not going to wake him.  Rest and liquids will be the cure I am sure.

Okay now for the recipe I promised.  Since I was speaking of cookies earlier, thought I would post one of Husband’s  favorites.

Super Dupers

  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • Confectioner’s sugar

Beat eggs, add sugar and vanilla.  Blend in shortening and chocolate.  Sift flour together with baking powder and salt.  Add to chocolate mixture.  Stir in nuts.  Refrigerate dough until easy to handle or overnight.  Preheat oven to 350.  Roll into  1 1/2 inch balls, roll in Confectioner’s sugar. Place on parchment lined cookie sheet.  Bake for about 10 minute…DO NO OVER BAKE. Cool on pan for one minute and remove to rack to completely cool.
