Happy Christmas!

It’s Christmas Eve-Eve and I will begin my chowder in just a few. Husband and I worked side by side all day yesterday gettng all our prep work done for today. Vegetables chopped, meat roll prepared, turkey injected, Italian Cream Cake made and frosted, Rachel got all the cookies decorated and they are just beautiful. Peanut Blossoms – done. As you know all my candy was made last week. Cream wafers – made and filled. Super dupers, chocolate chip and chocolate mint made and in the freezer. I will take them out in a bit. Then last night this older man who went to church with my husband’s family (they were Catholic) called about 8 o’clock. He wanted to know if I could make rolls like my mother in law. I told him no but I could make rolls that were good… why? He told me he had thought about her rolls for a week or more (my mother in law catered and also cooked for the Catholic school)~so I said “And…you need some rolls?” “Yes ma’am. I need some rolls for my Christmas Eve dinner. My daughter is coming to dinner and it would be real nice. How much would you charge me for a couple of dozen rolls?” I said “awww. Mr. C, let me just make you some and you come by and get them.” NO he wouldnt have it. He wouldnt take them if I wouldnt let him pay me. So I said “okay – how about $5?” Okay…he would be by about 11 on Christmas Eve day. Now, that isnt what I had in mind to do on Christmas Eve morning, but how in the world could I tell him no. He’s an elderly man, who may or may not have many Christmas Eve meals with his daughter and if I can make it better by making him a few rolls, then I am happy to do it. Well, not so much as happy but honored that he asked. I hope they are somewhat close to his expectations.

I better get busy, I know people will start arriving around noon even though we arent eating until supper time. It should be a great day of visiting, family and food.

I hope you all have a wonderful day. Much love to all – I feel like you are all friends who I come here to visit with every morning over a cup or two of coffee.

We have touch down!

Husband is home safe and sound. A very uneventful trip home – plane was a little late coming in from Atlanta but that is not too unusual. We are going to take part of the day to hang out but do have some work to do today. He told me on the way home last night he is going to make mini meatpies for our party. Happy for him to do it but as Oldest Daughter can tell you, they arent easy to make. To me, that is the hardest dough I have ever tried to master. I will type up his recipe for you later. Its a good one – just know going in, the dough is a challenge. For me anyway.

And I added a little something to my pre-meal menu. I am going to make a corn chowder for folks to snack on as they come in. I know my brother and others will be here a good bit early especially if there is a football game on that afternoon.

That’s all I have for this morning…got tons of things to do today – Have a great Friday.

Counting the hours now! And up to my eyeballs in cookies!

It is to the point now that I can tell you if all well and on schedule I will pick Husband up from the airport in 25 hours.  I spoke with him a couple of times today. He was settled in his hotel in Tunis trying to get some rest for a very long day tomorrow.  His plane leaves Tunis at 5 minutes until 2 in the morning our time.  And he wont arrive until 10 tomorrow night.  LONG day. I will hear from him when he reaches Paris and Atlanta and then we can talk as much and as often as we like – free calls within the continental US.  Poor man will pretty much have to hit the ground running as we have our big party on Sunday evening – the guest list keeps growing and that is great.  The more the merrier! We have fed 40+ in this little bitty house and the lights were out due to bad weather!  But we still had a great time.

I have baked almost all day.  Cutouts, super dupers, working on more…Cranberry Orange Oatmeal, Chocolate Chips, White Christmas Cookies.  Plus I have a birthday cake to bake for a customer from way back!  In fact she was a customer of my mother in law’s (G-d rest her soul) when she catered back in the 70’s.  It is her only grandchild’s first birthday and I am honored to make her cake.

I have worked on and off on the house too.  With that many people here it might be a moot point to do a real floor scrubbing but I will at least mop them before Sunday!  It is actually not too too bad even as busy as I have been.  It helps that I dont do laundry which as we all know is a never ending, thankless job.  The girls take care of all the laundry.  Rachel washes it all, Hannah folds and hangs up and Rachel and Ben put it away.  I have to admit I have done very little laundry in the past 20 years.  I started teaching my older kids how to do laundry when the oldest was about 9-10. And the job just keeps getting pasted down to the next ones as older ones moved out.  Dishes are another story!  Not a one of mine likes to do the dishes!  But, nonetheless, it is Ben’s job to keep the dishwasher unloaded.  And ready for the next load.  As I type this I realize I have an awful lot of help!  Rachel keeps the bathroom and the schoolroom kept.  I do the kitchen (except for putting away dishes) and who ever is up last is supposed to pick up thru the living room etc before going to bed.  We have a pretty good system.

I might be scarce for a couple of days with Husband coming home and all the party prep.  But I will be back with pictures of the festivities and more recipes!
