Baking Tools

You know there are just some things you must have to bake with.  Or at least things I have to have. Things past the obvious ~ oven, pans (though certain pans have become necessary to me), ingredients (though I have become very partial to certain ingredients!).  One thing that I have had a very long time and while it is “broken in” and soft and perfect in many ways, it just wasnt big enough for some jobs.  This is my pastry cloth.  I have a pastry cloth that, if I am remembering correctly, I have had for about 25 years.  Its age shows but it is still perfectly useful.  Just not big enough.  So I did a bit of research to see what most pastry cloths are made of ~ heavy cotton, heavy canvas and of course the Silpat® or silicone mats which I am not terribly fond of when used for this purpose.  Love them for baking, not so much for preparation.  Anywho, I decided ticking might be just the thing.

I have a bolt of red and natural ticking I bought for aprons and such.  It is heavy yet doesnt come out of the dryer in a wrinkled ball.  I am making focaccia for our meal tonight so I will let you know how it works out.  Husband is making Tandoori Pork chops and honey roasted carrots and I am in charge of the bread and mashed potatoes.  We have a salad already make from some lovely garden fresh lettuces

and some purchased peppers and other goodies.

We will have some of the “kids” here for this meal.  Our third born/second son, works away from home and is seldom here though I do think he will be in before his dad has to leave for Scotland at the end of the week.  Yep, work is taking Husband away for a week of his short >4 weeks home.  I am none to happy about it but that is about the end of it.  I am just not happy, he still has to go.  Again I will try to use my time wisely.  Rachel tells me we need to make croissants. And that may turn into an all day project since we have never attempted them.  Good chance to use the new pastry cloth! Of course…you will get the results – good or bad!

Yummm……. what time is dinner?
I have a made croissants before. They were good but not lovely and flaky like I would have liked. Let me know how your pastry cloth turns out and if your croissants come out flaky I would love the recipe. I love those things…. could eat a dozen at once.
Have a safe trip tomorrow and I will get her to work as soon as it is over. Let her know to call if she needs anything ! I cannot believe how fast these girls are growing up on us!
Take care!!

I have never had a pastry cloth. I guess I’ll have to make me one. It’s long been on my list of to gets . . .
