Frosted Cherry Drops from Gooseberry Patch’s 101 Hearty Recipes


Super Easy!  You are going to love these!

Frosted Cherry Drops

  • 18 1/2 ounce pkg white cake mix (I think if you had cherry chip cake mix on hand that might be awesome too!)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 3 T maraschino cherry juice
  • 1/4 t almond extract
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1/2 cup maraschino cherries, finely chopped
  • Garnish: maraschino cherries, quartered

In a bowl combine dry cake mix, sour cream, cherry juice, almond extract and egg.  Fold in chopped cherries. Drop by tsp 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheets.  Bake at 350 for 8-12 minutes or until edges are slightly golden.  Cool one minute on baking sheets; remove to a wire rack to cool completely.  Frost with Cherry Frosting; top with cherry quarters.  makes 2 1/2-3 dozen.

Cherry Frosting

  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 c margarine, softened
  • 1 T maraschino cherry juice
  • 2-3 T milk

In a small bowl, combine all ingredients, adding enough milk for desired spreading consistency.

The name maraschino refers to the marasca cherry of Croatian origin and the maraschino liqueur made from it, in which maraschino cherries were crushed and sweetened. Whole cherries preserved in this liqueur were known as “maraschino cherries”. They were, at first, produced for and consumed as a delicacy by royalty and the wealthy.

These look simple and tasty! My dad loves cherry chip cake, so this might be a fun alternative for a birthday cake. Especially when cherry chip cake mix seems so hard to find!


Oh those cherry drops look scrumptious. Loved the info on the origins of maraschino that was interesting. I didn’t know the history but I know my history with them and that is I have loved them since I was a little kid.


These frosted cherry drops are so pretty. They would be great at Christmas or Valentines Day as well. I love maraschino cherries!
