Me? Work retail? Are you sure?

ANNOUNCEMENT: OH do I have a surprise for you folks?!! Please come by Monday October 20th.  Please stay tuned and tell your friends.

Now a funny little thing that happened this weekend.

So Sunday my friend (who I will refer to as R) and I shopped like two crazy teenagers with Daddy’s credit cards. Before anyone (Jerry) panics I bought a t-shit, a sweater that may go back, a pair of earrings and some ladies “undergarmets”. Oh and my lunch. None of that is relevant to this story except the shopping part. The ALL day, crazy shopping. The next to the last place we go in is a pretty swanky place for the area. We walk in, haggard from the amount of walking we had done -our feet realized about 2 hours in we were NOT teenagers and just as we stepped through the door a nice salesperson asked if we needed help just as I pointed and said probably a bit too loud “There it is! That’s the color!” Now the rest of the story is the unbelievable part. Not the part that I spotted anything across three isles (old eyes) but the next few minutes were magical. Wait let me back up – my friend and I had just been saying (yes, she completely agreed with me) that I just don’t think I am hire-able. Or if I am, could I keep a job given my lack of enthusiasm about pretty much everything? Not the least of those things, clothes. So the next few minutes tickled our funny bones for sure.

Salesperson: Well…that was fast and remarkable. It does match your jacket.

R and I look at each other and shrug.

Me: Yeah, I am pretty great I have to admit. I have fitted R with several extraordinarily adorable outfits today.

Salesperson: Are you looking for a job? We are hiring. Seriously.

Me: Ma’am I am standing in this very nice upscale women’s clothing store in a Walmart t-shirt, dirty jeans and birkenstocks with socks. Do you really think you want to hire me?

Salesperson: Yes. Yes I do. I have a feeling you know how to dress and besides you get huge discounts on clothes here if you don’t have workwear.

Again I step back a little so she can get a good look at me. No make up. Hair greasy from the humidity. She looks me over.

Salesperson: Smiles a big smile and says I am going to talk to my manager and get you an application.

Me: WAIIIT – hold up a second there missy. See, my husband is home 23-24 days at the most EVERY.OTHER.MONTH. I don’t do anything but hang with him when he’s home. So even if this would be quite the coup, I don’t think you want me to work here. I am not…well…very tactful. R snorted.

Salesperson: You seem perfectly nice to me. Oh that would be fine. Make your own hours. Just put yourself on the schedule when you CAN work. Oh you’d be great! Be right back!

Me: Okay. Sure. I’ll take an application.

and she takes off.

We are standing there looking at each other cracking up. Discussing how big a mistake this woman could be making and me thinking in Bizaro world, if I took this job, she’d get fired right along with me for being the idiot that got me hired. And she may actually need/want a job. That would be sad.

So she returns with an application, practically giddy and telling me how she spoke to the manager and the “work when you feel like it” would be fine and how she put her name on the application. AHHH light bulb – maybe she’s recruiting and it’s the end of the sales week. Oh lady, poor lady. Really, I am not a good candidate.

So I nod at all the right times in the conversation all the while folding the application and putting it in my back pocket.

Salesperson: Now don’t lose that! And get it back to us. Now is there anything else I can help you ladies with?

Disclaimer: There is none. This actually happened and it won’t be funny to people who don’t actually know me well and what a crabby old lady I can be. And how my very VERY favorite thing to wear is overalls. Old, patched, worn out overalls. With fancy jewelry. And birkenstocks. OH and yoga pants…oh yoga pants, how I love you. I am quite the dresser-upper.

But I have to admit 50% off markdowns sounds pretty sweet.

Tired of Vermont Photos? Too bad :)

As I promised – here I am again with MORE Vermont tales.  To refresh your memories or if you are just popping in for the first time ~ my oldest and dearest girlfriend and I took a fantabulous vacay to Vermont last October.  We had the best time.  She’s a perfect traveling partner.  We WILL do it again.  And soon.

When I last left off  the Tales of Vermont 2013, we were headed to Robert Lee Frost’s home.  EEEK! We were so excited.  Her more than me I suspect because…well she’s more well read than I am.  Since she’s an English major/teacher and master of our native tongue, it stands to reason.  And since her daughter made a perfect score of 36 in English on the ACT and mine only made a 34 she gets top billing on this leg of our adventure.  These girls of ours are stories for other days.  But let’s just say no two mothers alive love their sons and daughters more than we do.  That is a fact.

Okay…so we see Mr. Frost’s grave and go BERSERK!

We tend to do that fairly easily when we are away from home and don’t run the risk of people we know witnessing two middle aged women jumping up and down like we were 8 or something.

So anywho, we map it and are still way too excited for words to do justice and off we go…

Okay so we just thought we were excited. Then the house came into view.

There were so many “oh my…oh my… oh my” s and eeeeeks that we were just plain old giddy by the time we parked and got out.  I mean can you tell from this one picture what a beautiful PERFECT day this was?  Perfect I tell you.  Bright blue October skies in Vermont.  There’s not much else that needs to be said.  But of course, I will.  Say much more.

Apparently as fans of Robert Frost goes, we are in fairly good company.  The benefactors of this museum are pretty important people it would seem.

We of course agreed immediately that we felt privileged as we stepped over the threshold and onto a sun porch that the man himself sat on many a day warming himself by this old potbelly stove.

Oh Elinor what lovely taste you had.  If you don’t know much about Robert Frost’s life, I encourage you to read about him.  Through great suffering and I do mean GREAT suffering, he wrote some of the most acclaimed poetry.

We were trying not to look like doofuses but when we saw this, in Mr. Frost’s own hand we could barely contain ourselves.  I think the only thing that might have made this more exciting would have been to be standing there with Catherine Vines Davis.  Mrs. Davis was one of our high school English teachers and a hoot.  One of the most eccentric people I have ever known.  And I am quite sure she would have had some dirt to share about Robert Frost.  She liked nothing more than to gossip about dead writers and poets!

What a beautiful place the Frost family lived.  Yet, in all the beauty and peace this place should have brought him and his, there was much grief and loss and sorrow.  I believe most of the most gifted have the most struggles.  There is a very fine line between genius and madness.  I think Mr. Frost stood on that line many days of his life.  And if you read his bio, you won’t wonder why.  Nonetheless, he wrote and produced beautiful words for the world to read.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

~ Robert Lee Frost (March 26, 1874 – January 29, 1963)

As before, stay tuned.  Have a lovely Sunday everyone!

Beautiful Autumn Day in Vermont

1394356_10202085219682858_414374885_n

As promised, second installment of October 2013 Vermont vacation.

These photos are of mine and Robbin’s trip to Bennington and Beyond 🙂 We didn’t really have a plan when we started out that morning.  It was the only day we really did just say “Let’s just go. And see where the winds of this Autumn day take us.”  And wow was that the way to go!  It was a gorgeous day and we had a blast!  We even accidentally drove over the state line so we could say we went to New York that day as well.

Now that’s the kind of church I can get behind!  Separation of church and state! What a concept !! 😉 (Read: sarcasm) I don’t do politics on my blog (yet) but it’s not because I don’t think about it or have opinions.  I have opinions in spades! Just suffice it to say I, for one, do not want to live in a theocracy.  You do your thing, I’ll do mine, MKay? LOL.  It is a beautiful building and still holds services.  I had a very emotional reaction to standing in the church dreaming of what it must have been like back in 1762 – to be one of the women who help establish a community.

If I were one of the family members I would beg the “head of the house” to request this box – Lucky Number 13!

539627_10202085212442677_1270256663_n

And this would be my views of the church from my perch in Box 13.  Imagine it packed full and the whole place vibrating with the sound of voices singing to the heavens.

From the looks of the percussion instruments along with this amazing organ – they maybe quite the modern sounding congregation.

1376501_10202085214082718_454129622_n

And as services ended we would stroll home along the fence row,

1209285_10202085216722784_1051137787_n

And into the cemetery to lay a flower or two on the graves of loved ones who most certainly had found their way there.

I love the look of the old headstones.  Such craftmanship.

1385366_10202085215642757_1910489738_n

And then THERE IT WAS! Robert Frost’s grave.  OH MY – did we not know it would be there??  Had we even thought of it?  I mean we talked about him at length when we were up at Bread Loaf looking around and wondering what it would be like to be part of a “writer’s colony” – how fabulous would that be?  I mean it would help to be writers of course but oh if the walls could talk!

1376503_10202085215442752_1362393842_n

This photo is quite possibly the favorite of all times. Lovely lighting.  Taken in my favorite place (besides home) in the world. My favorite month.  With my oldest and dearest girlfriend. And Autumn showing it’s truest colors.  Bliss I tell you. Pure Bliss.

Before I bid you farewell for today I leave you with the promise of an other installment involving a photo essay of our tour of Robert Frost’s home and  the funniest story of the day. It was time to stop for lunch and we saw this little place along the road just outside Bennington.  It was like the old fashioned burger joint – only seating was in your car or at a few picnic tables.  They had quite a menu that even advertised a “veggie burger”.  Robbin, being vegan, asked the man taking orders what was in the veggie burger.  And I swear to you, he had to have his 100th birthday in his sights.  He looked at her for what seemed like much longer than it was and without changing his expression he says “vegetables”.  LOL we just died laughing.  So she was brave and ordered it, I had fried clams if you were wondering.

See you all soon!  Hey, tell your friends about this blog.  Pretty please?  Thanks and have a wonderful October day!
